Iceland Expedition Itinerary Draft

I’ve been working really hard on creating a great trip. I don’t know what the cost will be yet or the final itinerary but is this a rough draft of the trip. I think I will keep this trip to around 10 photographer and I will happen next spring(2018). If you want to go start saving your pennies!

 

Iceland Itinerary Draft

In 10 days you will  see waterfalls , swim in hidden hot springs, climb volcanoes, and try foods you’ve never thought you eat .

We will drive mostly on Route 1 (also called The Ring Road or Þjóðvegur 1) the entire trip.

We start is Reykjaviv and then head to the West

Reykjavik

You will fly into Keflavik, We will take  a cab to our hotel.

What we will see:

The Hallgrímskirkja Church: . The architecture is inspired by the natural black lava columns you’ll see around Iceland.

Harpa: Walk on over to the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre at sunset to capture the stunning reflections on the building.

 

Where we Sleep:

Center Hotels Arnarhvoll: We  start the next  day with their complete breakfast while sitting on the deck, watching the boats sail by. The location is walking distance from food, shops, drinks, and famous sites.

Kex HostelKex Hostel  Grab a coffee and sit in the cafe while you plan out your itinerary for the day.

Where to Eat & Drink:

Hverfisgata 12: The best pizza in the small yellow house located at Hverfisgata 12.

MAR: There are several options for dinner spots in Reykjavik. If you want to stay near the water after a trip to Harpa, enjoy a lamb dinner and chocolate lava cake dessert at MAR.

Mokka-Kaffi: Treat yourself to a waffle at Mokka-Kaffi.

Where to Shop:

Reykjavik Trading Co.We will stop by  Reykjavik Trading Co.

  and Geysir to and get any gear we might need

We will drive a rental car from here.

Exploring West Iceland:

My first stop in the West of Iceland was Budir in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

What to See:

The Black Church: The Black Church in Budir

Arnarstapi and Hellnar: Next, head to the little fishing village called Arnarstapi.

Drive to the back of the small town to see the incredible sea stack rocks called Gatklettur.

There is a path that you can take from here to another old fishing village called Hellnar.

Djúpalónssandur and Dritvík: a black pebble beach.

There is a  trail down to the beach that weaves you through giant rock formations. . Once you see the ocean you’ll also notice that the beach is covered in bright orange pieces of a rusted shipwreck from the early 20th century.

Kirkjufell Mountain: This uniquely shaped mountain is the most photographed mountain in Iceland.

Stykkishólmur: This town was featured in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, we will get lunch here then Walk up to the lighthouse at sunrise to get a stunning view of the West Fjords.

We will stay the night at:

Hotel Egilsen: You might also recognize Hotel Egilsen from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It looks like a little red school house and is just as cozy and inviting on the inside.

Fjöruhúsið Café:

Narfeyrarstofa: Before you head to bed in Stykkishólmur, enjoy a delicious dinner atNarfeyrarstofa. This restaurant uses local ingredients, including their amazing mussels. They also serve whale and whale beer here! This restaurant is located right behind the hotel.

Exploring North Iceland

While in the North of Iceland we will travel through the Akureyri and Myvatn areas.

What we will See:

Goðafoss and Dettifoss:

Hverir: geothermal mud pools that are bubbling and steaming all around you. Continue up the road and you’ll find the Víti Crater.

Krafla Volcano:

Myvatn Lake:

Myvatn Nature Baths: End the day at the Myvatn Nature Baths.

Sleep: Hotel Reynihlid:

What to Eat:

Akureyri Backpackers

What to See: Egilsstaðir:

scenic drive to Jökulsárlón.

Jökulsárlón: The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon: boat ride through the glaciers. On the other side of the bridge is a black sand beach where pieces of glaciers wash up onto shore.

Fjallsárlón: mini glacier lagoon. a bit of a ways south from Jökulsárlón

Where to Sleep: Hali Country Hotel

Where to Eat & Drink:

Humarhöfnin:  known for their lobster.

Hali Country Hotel Restaurant:  it looks like a gigantic bookcase.

Exploring South Iceland

What to See:

Skaftafell National Park:  Svartifoss Waterfall (Black waterfall) that is surrounded by basalt lava columns. Drive up the hill and take hike the whole way.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur: Drive to the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. basalt column formation called, Kirkjugólfið.

Systravatn and Systrafoss:, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, drive to Systrafoss (the sister waterfalls).

Hike to  see Systravatn (sister lakes) and a gorgeous meadow.

Lava Fields Covered: When you’re driving along the Route 1 you’ll start to see lava fields covered in moss.

Vík: the quaint town of Vík. see and explore Dýrhólaey Cliffs, the black sand beaches, and Reynisdrangar.

Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss Waterfalls: See if you can spot gold at the bottom of the Skógafoss waterfall.

Afterwards, head to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall for a chance to walk behind a real waterfall.

Hot Springs: Seljavallalaug hotsprings. It’s a hidden hot spring and the oldest pool in Iceland.  

Laugarvatn Fontana. . Hrunalaug is another hidden hot spring.

Blue Lagoon: take a dip in the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is only about fifteen minutes away from the airport. You’ll sleep like a baby on the flight home.

Strondin Bistro and Bar: This restaurant is located in Vík and is right near the water and walking distance from the hotel.
